Summer Workshops August 2026

From the studio to the dance floor.

While our regular classes are on summer break, we’re still dancing here.

If you’re spending the summer in the region and would like to improve your tango, we invite you to join our summer workshops.

We’ve selected topics that are practical and can be directly applied to dancing at the milonga. We’ll help you move more confidently, effortlessly, and harmoniously at the milonga. Each workshop is self-contained and can be attended independently of the others.

Afterward, we invite you to put what you’ve learned into practice right away at our milonga and wrap up the evening together on the dance floor.

Summer Subscription Bonus

Subscribers can participate in one workshop per week at no additional cost from August 15 through August 29 to make up for the time when classes were not held. Excluded from the summer subscription bonus are the regular workshop series “Focus on Connection” on August 1 and the guest workshop on August 14 with Emilia Andrada.

Soltadas for the Milonga

A soltada is a brief opening of the embrace—a moment when the connection breaks and then comes back together. On the dance floor, however, this brief opening can quickly turn into an actual break in the connection. This causes the couple to lose their harmony, and in the worst case, leads to unclear movements or collisions with other dancing couples.

In these workshops, we work on dancing soltadas clearly, confidently, and musically so that the connection between partners is maintained even during the opening.

Workshop 1: Soltadas of the Following

Saturday, August 15 ·6:00–7:15 p.m.
With Simge & Mariana
Level: Level 3 and up · for couples

How the lead clearly signals and invites the opening, and how the follower executes it without losing the connection to their partner or the music.

Workshop 2: Soltadas for the Leader

Saturday, August 15 · 7:15–8:30 p.m.
With Simge & Mariana
Level: Level 3 and up · for couples

How the person in the lead opens up the embrace without making the person following feel uncomfortable, and how the person following remains connected, attentive, and responsive throughout.

Lápiz and Enrosques

Lápiz and Enrosques are among the most elegant turning elements in tango. They require good body coordination, balance, and a clear connection between partners. Without this foundation, turns can quickly come across as forceful, stiff, or unbalanced—rather than fluid and musical.

In this workshop, we’ll explore the technical fundamentals so that Lápiz and Enrosques can be integrated into your dance easily, with control, and in harmony.

Workshop 1: The Basics

Saturday, August 21 · 6:00–7:15 p.m.
With Leandro & Mariana
Level: Level 3 and up · for couples

The basics of turning techniques, as well as the techniques of Lápiz and Enrosques. We’ll show you how both elements can be integrated naturally and musically into the dance.

Workshop 2: Combinations and Variations

Saturday, August 21 · 7:15–8:30 p.m.
With Leandro & Mariana
Level: Level 4 and up · for couples

Lápiz and Enrosques are combined into fluid sequences of movement. We work on various entries and exits, musical variations, and conscious, space-saving movement on the dance floor.

Milonga – Pepito’s Rhythmic Playing

Pepito Avellaneda’s milonga style is known for its creative musicality and playful little jumps. To ensure these don’t seem abrupt or throw off the rhythm, both dance partners need to be in sync and communicate clearly. Only then do these playful elements become a natural part of the milonga.

Together, we’ll lay the groundwork so that Pepito’s signature energy can be integrated into your dance in a way that’s light, musical, and harmonious.

Workshop 1: Preparation and Timing

Saturday, August 22 · 6:00–7:15 p.m.
With Emile & Simge
Level: Level 3 and up · for couples

The basics of preparation and synchronized timing—at a relaxed pace and with a clear focus on musicality and connection.

Workshop 2: Introductions and Variations

Saturday, August 22 · 7:15–8:30 p.m.
With Emile & Simge
Level: Level 4 and up · for couples

We combine the basics with various entries and rhythmic variations. In doing so, we demonstrate how the characteristic jumping elements emerge organically from the music and are clearly communicated between the two dance partners.

1 Cortado – 7 Variations

The cortado is a brief, concise pause in the dance that gives the music space and creates tension. With clear leadership, it becomes a harmonious part of the dance. Without this clarity, the movement can seem abrupt and disrupt the connection between the partners. Starting with a basic cortado, we’ll develop seven musical and space-saving variations for the milonga.

Workshop 1: Rhythm and Expression

Friday, August 28 · 6:00–7:15 p.m.
With Simge & Mari
Level: Level 3 and up · for couples

Building on the basic cortado structure, we explore variations in rhythm and accentuation. In doing so, we play with different musical focal points—sometimes the leader sets the rhythmic accent, and sometimes the follower does.

Workshop 2: Variations in Space

Friday, August 28 · 7:15–8:30 p.m.
With Simge & Mari
Level: Level 3 and up · for couples

Building on this foundation, we’ll explore variations in direction and spatial arrangement. This way, you’ll learn to adapt the Cortado flexibly and musically to different situations on the dance floor.

Vals on Neo & Non-Tango

The tango-vals thrives on its flowing, circular movement and its characteristic 3/4 time signature. But what happens when the music doesn’t come from the classic tango repertoire? Without a deliberate adaptation, the vals quickly loses its typical character—either it seems too rigid for the new music, or its rhythmic identity is lost.

Starting with the basics, we’ll show how the rhythm, quality of movement, and dynamics of the vals can be applied to neo-tango and non-tango music.

Workshop 1: Fundamentals of Contemporary Music

Saturday, August 29 · 6:00–7:15 p.m.
With Simge & Claudia
Level: Level 2 and up · for couples

Simple and easy-to-dance ways to apply the rhythmic clarity of the waltz to different musical styles—from neo to non-tango.

Workshop 2: Flow and Rotational Movements

Saturday, August 29 · 7:15–8:30 p.m.
With Simge & Claudia
Level: Level 3 and up · for couples

Musical phrasing, rotational movements, and a continuous flow of movement that preserves the fluid character of the waltz even beyond the realm of classical tango music.

A flexible, lively connection is the basis for sensitive dancing, demanding elements such as gancho, boleo, sacada, volcada and colgada, as well as for dynamic turns and differentiated musical expression.

In playful exercises and clearly structured sequences, we deepen and expand the essence of connection, communication and shared dynamics. This is not about a repertoire of figures, but about quality, clarity and fine tuning within the couple.

August 1518.00 – 20.30SaturdayEmilia Andrada (ARG)

In this workshop, Emilia explores the topic “Body Architecture—Dynamics Between Coordinated Legs” from various perspectives:

Technique: Impulse and Traction – How Movement Is Transferred Between Partners
Step Patterns: Corriditas (small, quick running steps) and Ochitos (small ochos)

Emilia Andrada is a choreographer, dance teacher and tango DJ with a degree in contemporary dance and a sound education in the roots of tango in Buenos Aires.

She has more than 23 years of international experience. Her artistic and teaching career has taken her to Japan, Switzerland, Germany, France, Great Britain, Brazil, Mexico and Cyprus.

In her classes, Emilia combines precise tango technique from a biomechanical perspective with an in-depth exploration of the connection between the dancers. Her method is clearly structured, physically grounded and at the same time sensitive to the essence of tango: communication, presence and movement together. The result is an intensive learning experience with clear concepts and a direct link to social dance practice.

Do you know that?
Do you sometimes feel like you’re just “following” instead of really dancing? Do you sometimes not feel really present? Your posture is either too stiff or too loose? Your hips don’t react the way you want them to and your feet don’t always land as elegantly as you’d like?

I (Simge) know exactly how that feels – I felt the same way a few years ago. But everything changed when I started to work specifically on my movement, with Emile by my side, challenging me again and again. In doing so, I realized a simple but crucial truth: as a follower, you have much more control than you think. That’s exactly what I want to share with you.

In this workshop series I would like to help you to feel this power in your own body and to transform your dancing through small, conscious changes. We will work on:

✔️ A posture that is alive – elastic, flexible and adaptable without losing your balance.
✔️ The conscious use of your hips – to actively shape movement rather than just react to it.
✔️ Expressive feet – that not only look beautiful, but interpret the music with precision, ease and personality.

In the first session of this series, we will dive into the fundamental elements and look at walking and ochos, among other things – not by merely memorizing technique, but through a deep understanding of the natural movement of your body.

I don’t want you to just “follow better”. I want you to live the dance to the full!
Let’s get the best out of your tango together!

Tango Milonguero

Aesthetic. Intimate. Social. The art of close embrace.

Exceptions: October & December

This is followed by the Milonguero Milonga.

Level: from level 4

Background

We want to promote the Milonguero culture in Heidelberg. Our goal is to form a group of dancers who internalize the essence of the milonguero style. If there is enough interest, we will create a training milonguero or a milonguero nuevo group.

We want participants who are serious about the milonguero style and make it an integral part of their dancing – at least at our milongas, such as the Milonguero Milonga. Your tango level or dance experience is irrelevant. What matters is your serious intention to learn and actively use this style.

Because we are convinced that the milonguero style significantly raises the standard of milongas – and that is exactly our goal!

I (Emile) have always wanted to establish a strong milonguero culture in Heidelberg. But although I have offered courses in the past, the results have often fallen short of my expectations. Why? Because we are often too busy “doing” – managing dance elements, planning sequences and experimenting between open style and tight embrace.

Even if many milonga visitors, whether here or elsewhere, dance in a closed embrace, this does not automatically mean that they are dancing milonguero. Minimalist dancing is often confused with milonguero. But milonguero is much more than that. Milonguero is true passion. But to master this style, you first have to learn it properly.

Who are the Milonguero workshops suitable for?

  • Ambitious tango dancers from level 4 who are serious about learning and practicing Milonguero and are ready to embrace the Milobnguero philosophy and are open to change
  • Tango dancers who want to help shape a startke Milonguero culture in Heidelberg
  • Tango dancers who have read and understood my blog about Milonguero

What is Tango Milonguero about?

It’s not about reducing tango figures or elements. On the contrary, I love to dance in a diverse and variable way. Rather, it’s about how we live the dance – the posture, the connection and the feeling.

It is also not about honing a single tango element for hours on end and repeating it over and over again. Rather, it’s about bringing numerous variations of an element to life to different rhythms in one hour and enjoying the music in all its beauty.

And how many figures do you dance? That doesn’t matter at all. Some people prefer to dance lots of figures, others prefer to keep it simple. Either is fine.

So it’s not about dancing “cleanly”, technically and academically. Nor is it about whether you incorporate many or few figures. Whether you do 100 elements in one minute or one element in 100 minutes – THAT is secondary. What really counts is understanding the structure, living the connection properly and letting the rhythm flow through the whole body. The milongueros understand this perfectly.

My vision:

I came to Heidelberg from Oldenburg because I believe that together we can create something special. A milonguero culture that makes Heidelberg known as a city – as a place where people dance beautifully and authentically, and where talented tango dancers love to come.

Let’s realize this vision together at the Milonguero Milonga. I look forward to seeing you!

Dynamics and elasticity: expand your dance with new movement possibilities.

The Nuevo workshops will be part of our new Master Class from 2026.

Who are the workshops suitable for?

  • Ambitious tango dancers from level 4 who are serious about learning and practicing Nuevo and are ready to embrace and be open to change
  • Tango dancers who want to concentrate on both the nuevo and milonguero styles and later join our nuevo-milonguero training group

What is Tango Nuevo and what is it not?

Tango Nuevo is not a new dance style or a wild mixture. It is Tango Argentino – rethought, analyzed, further developed.

“Nuevo” is often misunderstood – as a show, as a break with tradition. Our approach is different:
deeply rooted in the culture of tango, open to the present and the future.

Our goal: A milonguero nuevo training group

If we find a motivated group, we would like to continue together – with regular training sessions, exchanges and perhaps our own Milonguero Nuevo Milonga.

Milonga & Vals

Rhythmus und Fluss: Erlebe die Lebendigkeit der Milonga und die Dynamik des Vals.

DateTimeDayInstructor
Dezember 2718.00 – 20.30SaturdaySimge & Claudia

Our milonga takes place afterwards.

Level: from level 2

Location: Intango Tango Center Heidelberg, Mary-Somerville-Platz 5, 69214 Heidelberg

Participation fee (per person/workshop): € 35 / with subscription € 25 / with student status € 17.50

We dedicate ourselves to two closely related dance forms of Tango Argentino that are a must at every milonga: the milonga and the vals.
The milonga is lively, rhythmic and playful – at the same time, it is considered the historical precursor of Tango Argentino. The vals, on the other hand, is characterized by its flowing, circular movement and its characteristic three-four time. Both dances expand the dance repertoire and significantly deepen the musical understanding of tango.

In the workshops, we analyze the musical structures of milonga and vals in a practical way: rhythm, phrasing (rhythmic and melodic), accents and typical dynamics. Building on this, we develop suitable movement principles, contrasts, timing, control of balance and turns and simple to more complex combinations. The aim is to develop confidence in dancing these two styles and to implement them on the milonga in a relaxed, musical and situation-appropriate way.

Who are the workshops suitable for?

The workshops are deliberately designed to be open to different levels:
Beginners who have completed a beginner’s course receive a structured introduction and clear orientation. Dancers with intermediate and advanced experience deepen their musicality, variation possibilities and the quality of connection and movement. Advanced dancers benefit from subtleties in rhythm, dynamics, interpretation and stylistic differentiation.

Prerequisite: at least one completed beginner’s course.
