Heidelberg New Year’s Tango Weekend

From Tradition To Tomorrow

Celebrate New Year’s Eve and the first few days of 2027 in beautiful Heidelberg and dance for four days at our new Tango Center Heidelberg.

Four days, six milongas—each with its own musical identity: from traditional tango to contemporary and alternative sounds. Experience a curated musical journey through the diverse soundscapes of tango.

From Tradition to Tomorrow

This motto describes how we understand tango. Its future does not lie in leaving tradition behind, but in building upon it. Tradition and innovation do not have to be opposites. They can inspire each other, open up new perspectives, and further develop social tango.

Winter School with Emile Sansour & Simge Yüz

The gap between “I know this figure” and “I can definitely dance it at the milonga tonight”—that’s exactly what these nine hours are all about.

Our intensive 9-hour Winter School (optional) includes six workshops and focuses on what really works at a milonga. Instead of constantly learning new steps, you’ll develop skills you can apply right away at any milonga.

The Schedule

Every day follows a relaxed rhythm: Winter School, an afternoon milonga, and an evening milonga that lasts well into the night.

There are no set mealtimes or long breaks in the schedule. Take breaks whenever it suits you—explore Heidelberg, grab a bite to eat, or relax at the hotel—and enjoy the weekend at your own pace.

Light snacks will be available throughout the weekend. Beverages can be purchased at our bar.

New Year’s Eve Milonga

On New Year’s Eve, we’ll toast the New Year together with a glass of sparkling wine or a non-alcoholic alternative. We’ll also serve a small selection of traditional New Year’s Eve pastries. Look forward to a festive night of partying with guests from Germany and abroad, featuring a 50/50 mix of music: 50% traditional tango and 50% neo-, non-, and fusion tango.

You can find recommendations for restaurants and hotels within walking distance here.

The number of participants is limited to 100 dancers . When confirming registrations, we ensure a balanced distribution of dance roles.

Registration begins: August 6, 2026, at 6:00 p.m.

Winter School

What Really Works at the Milonga.

In addition to the milongas, you can look forward to a 9-hour intensive workshop program with Emile Sansour and Simge Yüz from the Tango Center Heidelberg.

The gap between “I know this figure” and “I can definitely dance it at the milonga tonight”—that’s exactly what these 9 hours are all about.

Almost every tango dancer knows this feeling: A move went well in class and looked easy in the video—but at a milonga, surrounded by other couples and with music that doesn’t wait, it suddenly doesn’t turn out the way you imagined.

Using selected elements, we’ll work on what actually makes a milonga work: consciously playing with tempo, dynamics, and intensity; listening to your partner; and staying flexible when things on the dance floor don’t go as planned.

This program isn’t designed to perfect your moves, but rather to help you dance with awareness, flexibility, and composure—even when the music, the connection, or the dance floor call for something different than you had planned.

Friday, January 1, 2027 – The Change

When we speak, we don’t speak monotonously—we pause, draw out words, or speed up. It works the same way in tango. Our goal is to consciously play with tempo, dynamics, and intensity, while keeping our communication precise and clear. To do this, we use the following tools:

Workshop 1: 1:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m.

Cortados, Back Ochos, and Volcadas—not just as dance steps, but as sudden shifts in intensity

Workshop 2: 2:30 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Ganchos combined with boleos—the contrast between a sharp accent and a flowing line.

Saturday, January 2, 2027 – The Dialogue

The leader initiates a conversation, the follower responds, the leader listens—and then the dialogue shifts. Our goal is to understand and shape this exchange as something in which both roles actively participate—not as something that one side carries out while the other merely follows. To achieve this, we use the following tools:

Workshop 3: 1:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m.

Leader-Back-Sacada into a Gancho—initiate the move and immediately follow through with the reaction.

Workshop 4: 2:30 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Follower Enrosque into a Sacada—the same sequence, from a different perspective.

Sunday, January 3, 2027 – The Encounter

A crowded dance floor demands something very specific from you: the ability to change direction immediately without breaking the connection or losing the moment. Because that’s exactly where it’s decided whether something works at the milonga. Our goal is to develop the flexibility that creates space for all the other couples. To do this, we use the following tools:

Workshop 5: 1:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m.

Change of direction—from the base, over a colgada, out of the back ocho, under real time pressure.

Workshop 6: 2:30 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Change of Direction – Back Ocho, with a turn and Cortado, Leader Soltada, and a clean reconnection if things don’t go as planned.

After all, in the end, it’s not the lessons but the milonga that shows what really works.
