Beginner Workshop
Your first step into tango.

✔️ No prior experience required
✔️ Couples & individuals (m/f/d) warmly welcome
✔️ free for students, apprentices & Kulturpass holders
In this beginner workshop, we guide you step by step into the world of Argentine Tango—in a relaxed atmosphere. You’ll learn fundamental movement principles, musical understanding, and partner interaction. The focus is on awareness, connection, and respectful communication in dance.
Tango unites people regardless of origin, language or social background. The workshop on March 14 is part of the International Week against Racism in Heidelberg. Tango itself arose from cultural diversity and enables encounters at eye level through music, improvisation, embrace and non-verbal communication.
What you’ll learn:
- walking together as a couple to music
- tango embrace & connection
- principles of leading and following
- the base, the rock step, and the ocho
Traditionally in tango, the man leads and the woman follows—but with us, all forms are welcome: women, men, and people of all genders who want to lead or follow, or are simply curious.
Following the beginner workshop, there will be a Chacarera workshop. Chacarera is a traditional Argentine folk dance performed in groups that promotes community and openness. The Chacarera workshop is open to everyone, including external dancers, and is offered on a donation basis.
This is followed by the milonga, the social tango dance evening.

Level 7: SmartTango Styles
Tango diversity: understanding styles and adapting them flexibly in pairs.

In the next cycle of SmartTango we will focus on tango styles.
When we started SmartTango, our goal was to take your personal development beyond just learning steps. Now we’re taking the next step and covering tango styles. Because a truly accomplished social dancer doesn’t rely on a single repertoire of movements – they have the ability to adapt and communicate effectively with any partner, regardless of style. To do this, you should not only know styles by name, but also be able to apply them:
- Canyengue: Insights into the roots, rhythm and grounded connection of early tango. It is worthwhile to take a closer look at this style. Because many elements of today’s tango come from this style. It also improves your sense of rhythm immensely.
- Tango Salón: The tango structure, the controlled axis, the big “elegant” steps, the posture and its use in the social environment.
- Milonguero: From the art of fused embrace, body adaptation, full elasticity (stretching, stretching and twisting), to continuous, non-verbal communication – essential for dancing in full, intimate milongas.
- Tango Nuevo: The development of tango. Who is Who, how tango has developed to date and where the journey could take us. Improvisation and innovation in tango. The changes in structure in classical tango, leading and following. Exploring figures, elements and body communication.
We don’t tell you which style to choose; you decide for yourself! Our aim is to sensitize you to the fascinating and diverse world of Argentine tango, to promote your flexibility and to prepare you for an authentic immersion in this world.
The course can be attended from levels 5 and 6.

“When I make the long journey from Oldenburg, I want to experience a strong milonga culture in the Heidelberg tango community – with sensitive dancers, high-quality tango, great music, first-class DJs and sensitive, discerning partners at the highest level.
To make this a reality, we need to build it together: A strong culture. A tango CULT.”
Emile Sansour
Our plan for your Friday evening:
- Sensitive, supple and demanding tango dancers
- Create and respect harmony and flow on the dance floor
- Living Cabeceo as a natural part of communication
- Dance music to enable a real connection
- Creating a collective experience and a community that is attuned to itself, its partner and the community
SmartTango Styles – Your course for strong tango
In this course we work on the basics that not only make you dance well, but dance strongly:
- A body that reacts, adapts and moves effortlessly,
- Sensitivity for rhythm and dynamics
- Genuine connection to the partner
- Curiosity to try new things, make mistakes and grow from them
- Helping to shape Heidelberg’s new milonga culture and acting as a role model
The SMARTe way
Our concept takes a holistic view of tango – without dogmatism or style restrictions. We are open to all facets: milonguero, nuevo, classical, modern – everything that keeps tango alive.
The SMART method stands for:
- Sophisticated (stylish): Elegance and style in every movement
- Musically Intelligent (musically sensitive): Sensing and realizing the rhythm, pauses and emotions of the music
- Articulate (clear & precise): Lead and follow with clear intention and clear communication
- Responsive (attentive & quick to react): React sensitively and flexibly to partners and Ronda
- Transformative (in development): Experiencing tango as a force that changes you on and off the dance floor
At SmartTango we are shaping a new generation of tangueras and tangueros: attentive, open, sensitive, curious and ready to develop their personality in tango – far away from rigid rules and “the one way to dance”.
Is SmartTango: Styles right for you?
This course is right for you if you:
- understand the philosophy of the course 100% and identify with it,
- love musical and dance variety – from classical tango to neo,
- are determined to develop yourself further and be a role model for others,
- want to take responsibility for the development of tango culture in Heidelberg,
- want to work hard on yourself and question and expand your way of thinking (even if this is sometimes uncomfortable)
- you would like to use your Friday evenings for SmartTango Styles and dance in our milongas to be a role model for others.

Tango Body Training
Strengthen your body– for flexibility, strength and lightness in tango.

Powerful, flowing movements are the key to an expressive tango.
This weekly training gives you the physical foundation to dance with ease, balance and presence.
Tango-specific advantages:
- Building core strength for stability in the embrace
- Improve posture and balance for smoother turns and steps
- Development of suppleness and control for elegant movements
- Joint-friendly, knee-friendly training for lasting strength
The training is inspired by Pilates and functional training – always with a focus on tango movements. Especially helpful for followers, but open to all dancers.
In contrast to our Followers in Focus workshops, which deepen concrete tango techniques (such as ochos or footwork), this training strengthens body awareness and the physical basis to further develop your dancing in milonguero/nuevo styles and in SMART tango.
This is where tango technique meets body training – for more skill, resilience, self-confidence and expressiveness on the dance floor.
What you need:
Comfortable clothes, mat, sports shoes – and your energy!
The course is suitable for all levels!
| Date | Time | Day | Management |
