Background

We want to promote the Milonguero culture in Heidelberg. Our goal is to form a group of dancers who internalize the essence of the milonguero style. If there is enough interest, we will create a training milonguero or a milonguero nuevo group.

We want participants who are serious about the milonguero style and make it an integral part of their dancing – at least at our milongas, such as the Milonguero Milonga. Your tango level or dance experience is irrelevant. What matters is your serious intention to learn and actively use this style.

Because we are convinced that the milonguero style significantly raises the standard of milongas – and that is exactly our goal!

I (Emile) have always wanted to establish a strong milonguero culture in Heidelberg. But although I have offered courses in the past, the results have often fallen short of my expectations. Why? Because we are often too busy “doing” – managing dance elements, planning sequences and experimenting between open style and tight embrace.

Even if many milonga visitors, whether here or elsewhere, dance in a closed embrace, this does not automatically mean that they are dancing milonguero. Minimalist dancing is often confused with milonguero. But milonguero is much more than that. Milonguero is true passion. But to master this style, you first have to learn it properly.

Who are the Milonguero workshops suitable for?

  • Ambitious tango dancers from level 4 who are serious about learning and practicing Milonguero and are ready to embrace the Milobnguero philosophy and are open to change
  • Tango dancers who want to help shape a startke Milonguero culture in Heidelberg
  • Tango dancers who have read and understood my blog about Milonguero

What is Tango Milonguero about?

It’s not about reducing tango figures or elements. On the contrary, I love to dance in a diverse and variable way. Rather, it’s about how we live the dance – the posture, the connection and the feeling.

It is also not about honing a single tango element for hours on end and repeating it over and over again. Rather, it’s about bringing numerous variations of an element to life to different rhythms in one hour and enjoying the music in all its beauty.

And how many figures do you dance? That doesn’t matter at all. Some people prefer to dance lots of figures, others prefer to keep it simple. Either is fine.

So it’s not about dancing “cleanly”, technically and academically. Nor is it about whether you incorporate many or few figures. Whether you do 100 elements in one minute or one element in 100 minutes – THAT is secondary. What really counts is understanding the structure, living the connection properly and letting the rhythm flow through the whole body. The milongueros understand this perfectly.

My vision:

I came to Heidelberg from Oldenburg because I believe that together we can create something special. A milonguero culture that makes Heidelberg known as a city – as a place where people dance beautifully and authentically, and where talented tango dancers love to come.

Let’s realize this vision together at the Milonguero Milonga. I look forward to seeing you!

Level: from level 4

Participation fee (per person/workshop): € 35 / with subscription € 25 / with student status € 17.50

The Nuevo workshops will be part of our new Master Class from 2026.

Who are the workshops suitable for?

  • Ambitious tango dancers from level 4 who are serious about learning and practicing Nuevo and are ready to embrace and be open to change
  • Tango dancers who want to concentrate on both the nuevo and milonguero styles and later join our nuevo-milonguero training group

What is Tango Nuevo and what is it not?

Tango Nuevo is not a new dance style or a wild mixture. It is Tango Argentino – rethought, analyzed, further developed.

“Nuevo” is often misunderstood – as a show, as a break with tradition. Our approach is different:
deeply rooted in the culture of tango, open to the present and the future.

Our goal: A milonguero nuevo training group

If we find a motivated group, we would like to continue together – with regular training sessions, exchanges and perhaps our own Milonguero Nuevo Milonga.

Do you know that?
Do you sometimes feel like you’re just “following” instead of really dancing? Do you sometimes not feel really present? Your posture is either too stiff or too loose? Your hips don’t react the way you want them to and your feet don’t always land as elegantly as you’d like?

I (Simge) know exactly how that feels – I felt the same way a few years ago. But everything changed when I started to work specifically on my movement, with Emile by my side, challenging me again and again. In doing so, I realized a simple but crucial truth: as a follower, you have much more control than you think. That’s exactly what I want to share with you.

In this workshop series I would like to help you to feel this power in your own body and to transform your dancing through small, conscious changes. We will work on:

✔️ A posture that is alive – elastic, flexible and adaptable without losing your balance.
✔️ The conscious use of your hips – to actively shape movement rather than just react to it.
✔️ Expressive feet – that not only look beautiful, but interpret the music with precision, ease and personality.

In the first session of this series, we will dive into the fundamental elements and look at walking and ochos, among other things – not by merely memorizing technique, but through a deep understanding of the natural movement of your body.

I don’t want you to just “follow better”. I want you to live the dance to the full!
Let’s get the best out of your tango together!

A flexible, lively connection is the basis for sensitive dancing, demanding elements such as gancho, boleo, sacada, volcada and colgada, as well as for dynamic turns and differentiated musical expression.

In playful exercises and clearly structured sequences, we deepen and expand the essence of connection, communication and shared dynamics. This is not about a repertoire of figures, but about quality, clarity and fine tuning within the couple.

Registration is possible with or without a partner.
You can dance with a partner or role change or stay in your usual role.

We respond to individual levels and personal issues.

We dedicate ourselves to two closely related dance forms of Tango Argentino that are a must at every milonga: the milonga and the vals.
The milonga is lively, rhythmic and playful – at the same time, it is considered the historical precursor of Tango Argentino. The vals, on the other hand, is characterized by its flowing, circular movement and its characteristic three-four time. Both dances expand the dance repertoire and significantly deepen the musical understanding of tango.

In the workshops, we analyze the musical structures of milonga and vals in a practical way: rhythm, phrasing (rhythmic and melodic), accents and typical dynamics. Building on this, we develop suitable movement principles, contrasts, timing, control of balance and turns and simple to more complex combinations. The aim is to develop confidence in dancing these two styles and to implement them on the milonga in a relaxed, musical and situation-appropriate way.

Who are the workshops suitable for?

The workshops are deliberately designed to be open to different levels:
Beginners who have completed a beginner’s course receive a structured introduction and clear orientation. Dancers with intermediate and advanced experience deepen their musicality, variation possibilities and the quality of connection and movement. Advanced dancers benefit from subtleties in rhythm, dynamics, interpretation and stylistic differentiation.

Prerequisite: at least one completed beginner’s course.
