What is tango for us?
As this is a difficult question to answer, we prefer to formulate what tango is not for us or what tango is not ONLY. Tango dancing is…
…not just the purest reproduction of the rhythm. It’s nice when dancing couples hear the beat or rhythm, but tango dancing is much more than that.
…not just showing passion and feelings by standing still on the dance floor (and making a suffering face) because you love the music. You can also do that when you’re not dancing.
…not just technique and making walking and the elements unnecessarily complicated by strict technical rules so that you can no longer walk normally.
…not just figure dancing and getting certain things right physically.
….not just minimalist dancing. Some people confuse minimalist dancing with milonguero style or tango salon. And some try to cover up their own limited skills.
…not just to demonstrate tango nuevo or the freedom of “modern” tango.
The “sufferers”, the “technicians”, the “pure rhythmic renderers”, the “figure dancers”, the “minimalists”, the “salonists”, the “neonists” or the “tango hippies” – these are all merely subjective projections of individual people.
Every style is neither bad nor good. It’s up to the person who uses it. 😉
We recognize it when someone prefers a certain style. But to describe it from its best side and declare it to be the truth and to weaken everything else does tango itself an injustice. Tango cannot be reduced to one characteristic!
What makes the tango special is:
The musical diversity with all its facets: rhythm, melody, drama, playfulness, dynamics, romance
The connection in a couple: the harmonious and continuous movements of two flexible bodies in music
The freedom of improvisation – and being able to deal with it: Diversity, uniqueness and body control
We appreciate tango in its diversity and wholeness and that is how we want to see, experience and teach it.
